What is local moving?

Moving within 50 miles of your current residence is normally considered a local move. Charges for local moving are usually based on an hourly rate; these rates vary depending on the amount of the labor necessary for a move. A one-bedroom apartment will require less labor than a four-bedroom house.

Proper packing is very important with any move. Your local mover can provide complete packing or partial packing service. The charges for packing are based on the number and the type of cartons required to pack specific items in your house.

As local moving charges are typically base upon time, there are steps that you can take to reduce the time, thus cost, of your move.

The single most important way to ensure an efficient move is to be organized!  You can save money and avoid not being prepared when the movers arrive on moving day.

Some helpful tips:

  • If possible, you may want to consider moving a few items yourself, it’s a good idea to move plants, pictures, and electronic items prior to the move.
  • Disconnect stereo equipment, computers, and other electronic items and secure cords and wiring.
  • If you are moving from, or to, an apartment make sure you reserve an elevator well in advance of your move. Ask the building manager for moving restrictions.
  • Secure parking access for the moving truck, the closer the better.
  • Prepare a plan for where the furniture will be placed in the new home.
  • Do any packing you choose to do yourself before the mover arrives. Mark each box with the room you wish it to be moved to. Delicate, or breakable items should be marked “Fragile”.
  • Dresser drawers can usually be left full. Articles in desks and end tables should be packed. Ask your mover about their policy concerning loose items in drawers.
  • Make sure you tell your local mover about the access to your new home. If the truck must be parked far from the residence it will impact your move.
